Yesterday, we announced that SPORTLOGiQ is proudly sponsoring the 2018 edition of MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference—the biggest sports analytics conference in the world. We’re big fans of the event and members of our team will be attending for the third year in a row. SPORTLOGiQ will have a significant presence there this year, including speaking on the conference’s sole hockey panel, exhibiting, and presenting an academic paper.

Finally, Greg Mori, one of our technical advisors and director of the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, was selected to present a research paper, Deep Learning of Player Trajectory Representations for Team Activity Analysis. The paper is about identifying player actions and team activities in games using hockey and basketball trajectory data. The research was funded by SPORTLOGiQ and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The patent is owned by SPORTLOGiQ.
In case you missed it, our academic team also presented a research paper last year, Clustering and Ranking NHL Players Using Location Information and Scoring Impact.
About the Panel
Hockey Analytics on the Fly boasts an impressive speaker lineup and brings together leaders from across the hockey industry. Speakers include, Dan Bylsma (Former NHL Head Coach, Penguins & Sabres), Chris Snow (Director of Hockey Analysis, Calgary Flames), John Chayka (GM, Arizona Coyotes) and, of course, Christopher Boucher. The panel will be moderated by the Athletic’s Alison Lukan and will take place on Friday, February 23rd at 8:30AM.
The panel will explore analytics from a variety of perspectives within the NHL and will take a look at how the league is harnessing new technologies to capture data. It will also address the challenges front offices and coaches face in tailoring strategy to insights derived from analytics as well as how to communicate data in a language that everyone understands. Finally, panelists will discuss the future of hockey analytics and the game-changing impact of player tracking technology.
About Christopher Boucher
Christopher Boucher is a data analyst and Director of Hockey Analytics & Services at SPORTLOGiQ. He worked as an NHL team consultant for 7 years and has over two decades of experience in hockey analytics and micro-stats. Christopher is the creator of the first-ever complete and binary NHL micro-stat tracking system and the creator of the micro-stat definitions used by 24 NHL teams. He is recognized as a leader by the NHL thanks to his ability to transform micro-stats into actionable data for coaches and players in a way that is easy to digest.
Christopher hopes to bring more insight to the panel discussion about how data is currently being communicated and consumed within the NHL at both the management and coaching levels. He will be able to elevate the discussion with his deep data knowledge and unique perspective on hockey analytics.
